Synopsis

Over the course of a single day, a Black British man’s attempt at a fun night out spirals into tragedy.

An unnamed Black Man wakes up determined to break free from his routine and enjoy a night on the town. As he prepares for his evening, he reflects on his life as a father and the challenges of adulthood. His optimism is slowly eroded as he faces microaggressions and outright racism while trying to enter and enjoy a club.

Cameron’s powerful monologue explores themes of racial profiling, police brutality, and the exhaustion of constantly being perceived as a threat. Through poetic language and vivid imagery, the play tracks how a series of “typical” interactions can escalate into violence when filtered through the lens of systemic racism.

Typical raises haunting questions about the pervasiveness of racism in British society and the toll it takes on Black lives. Can the cycle of prejudice and violence ever be broken? And how many “typical” days must pass before real change occurs?
