About the Living Archive

Welcome to the Living Archive. Think of it as a treasure trove, a learning space, and a shared notebook for writers.

Back in June 2022, we began this journey with a simple idea: Stories from the past can be powerful springboards for the stories of tomorrow. And every tale, every voice, matters. Some plays and voices have taken centre stage over the years, but others have lingered in the wings, waiting for their moment. We’re here to give them that moment.

With the invaluable partnership of Bloomberg Philanthropies, we have been able to create a rich resource for anyone who loves theatre. Dive in and explore over 2,000 plays from the Royal Court’s rich history since 1956. It’s a mix of the familiar, the forgotten, and everything in between.

But this isn’t just a look back. It’s a launchpad. Whether you’re an established writer drawing on past gems for inspiration, or an emerging voice carving out new narratives, the Living Archive is your space.

Because, at its heart, it’s about community. It’s about writers supporting writers, learning from those who came before, and shaping the path for those who’ll follow. We’re always growing, always evolving, and we’re doing it together.

Your voice, your experiences, your stories—they’re all part of the Living Archive.
