Synopsis

The ancient House of Atreus becomes a stage for unspeakable familial revenge and cannibalism.

Atreus, seeking vengeance against his brother Thyestes, lures him back from exile with promises of reconciliation and shared power. Unbeknownst to Thyestes, Atreus has murdered Thyestes’ sons and prepares to serve them as a feast. The play builds to its horrific climax as Thyestes unknowingly consumes his own children, only to have the truth revealed in a moment of sickening realisation.

Churchill’s version maintains the visceral horror of Seneca’s original while sharpening its critique of power and the cyclical nature of violence. Through stark, poetic language, she explores themes of betrayal, revenge, and the corruption of power. The play’s unflinching portrayal of brutality serves as a reflection on the depths of human cruelty and the devastating consequences of unchecked ambition.
