Synopsis
Tinker, an enigmatic and sadistic figure, oversees the grim proceedings. He subjects the inmates, who are interlinked by complex relationships, to brutal acts in the name of ‘love.’ Among them are siblings Grace and Graham, the latter of whom has died but whose presence and influence linger powerfully. Grace undergoes extreme physical transformations in her harrowing quest to become her brother, embodying her grief and love.
Rod, another inmate, endures horrific mutilation as a testament to his love for Grace, while Carl, subjected to unspeakable violence, clings to his love for Rod. Robin, a young boy, observes and mimics the violence he sees around him.
Kane’s play is a visceral exploration of love’s endurance in the face of extreme brutality and the limits of the human body and soul. The narrative is non-linear, fragmented, and punctuated by scenes of graphic violence and tenderness, challenging audiences with its stark portrayal of pain and its questioning of the nature of love and redemption. “Cleansed” is a deeply controversial and challenging work, reflecting Kane’s reputation for confrontational and emotionally intense theatre
