Synopsis

A gritty seaside town in the UK, where dreams crumble like sand castles

Kelly, a desperate teenager, navigates the treacherous waters of gang violence and societal neglect. Set against the backdrop of a decaying coastal community, the play follows Kelly’s descent into a world where brutality is currency and hope is a luxury few can afford.

Upton’s work pulls no punches in its exploration of youth alienation, cyclical violence, and the failure of social systems. Through sharp, staccato dialogue and unflinching scenes of conflict, Ashes and Sand paints a vivid picture of a generation left behind, where dreams turn to dust and survival often means compromising one’s humanity. As Kelly grapples with her toxic relationships and the consequences of her actions, the play forces audiences to confront uncomfortable truths about poverty, neglect, and the often invisible struggles of marginalised youth
