Synopsis
A sparse stage with a row of chairs. Cecilia clutches an embroidered napkin, a tangible link to the home she left behind.
A Migrant Ball of Thread follows the interwoven stories of immigrant women as they navigate life in a new land. Cecilia, Mariana, and their friends gather to share their experiences, their voices alternating between hope and heartache. As they await phone calls from distant loved ones and reminisce about the lives they’ve left behind, the play delves into the complexities of the immigrant experience.
Gregorio employs a fragmented, non-linear structure that mirrors the disjointed nature of memory and displacement. Props become powerful symbols – photo frames, a candle, a telephone – each evoking themes of cultural identity, family separation, and resilience. The women’s stories unfold through a series of vignettes, blending present-day struggles with cherished memories and dreams of reunion.
