Synopsis
Small district on an island somewhere in the West Indies 1947
Len returns to his small Caribbean island village, a conquering hero fresh from World War II, only to find that the battles at home are just as treacherous as those he left behind. As he struggles to maintain the facade of the brave soldier, we watch his carefully constructed lies unravel in the face of Minda’s relentless ambition and Sis’s quiet determination. The dusty village square becomes a stage for desires deferred, dreams crushed, and the painful clash between tradition and progress that threatens to tear this tight-knit community apart.
Pinnock’s play pulsates with the restless energy of a people on the cusp of change. Through a series of intimate vignettes, she explores the complex legacy of colonialism and the ways in which the war has reshaped expectations and aspirations. The ever-present sound of the sea serves as a constant reminder of the world beyond the island’s shores, tantalizing some with promises of escape while anchoring others to their roots. As Len grapples with his own guilt and disillusionment, the play becomes a poignant meditation on the nature of heroism and the high price of progress. With humor, pathos, and unflinching honesty, Pinnock forces us to confront the harsh realities of a society in flux and the individual costs of chasing a collective dream.
