Synopsis

A political press office and various locations across Britain. Present day.

WordPlay is a kaleidoscopic exploration of language, power, and identity in contemporary Britain. Through a series of interconnected vignettes, the play follows the fallout from a Prime Minister’s inflammatory remarks about Islam, examining how words shape perceptions and impact lives across society.

Hussain’s play is a dissection of political manipulation and the power of rhetoric in shaping public opinion. Through its fragmented structure – moving from a frantic press office to intimate personal moments – the play illuminates the ripple effects of careless words from those in power. WordPlay grapples with themes of media spin, institutional racism, and the lived experiences of British Muslims. Hussain’s dialogue crackles with tension, exposing the gap between public statements and private realities. The play’s innovative use of word association games and repeated phrases highlights how language can be weaponised and internalised. By focusing on a diverse cast of characters affected by the PM’s statement, Hussain creates a panoramic view of a society grappling with its own prejudices and the consequences of divisive rhetoric.
