Synopsis

A bedroom in contemporary Ireland. A woman’s final hours

Woman, dying and bedridden, reflects on her life, loves, and regrets as she faces her imminent death. Accompanied by Scarecrow, a manifestation of her conscience or soul, she navigates complex emotions and unresolved conflicts. Her husband, simply called Him, struggles to connect with her in these final moments, while the spectre of Death looms in the wardrobe.

Marina Carr’s Woman and Scarecrow is a poetic and haunting exploration of mortality, regret, and the complexities of love. Through Woman’s fragmented memories and sharp exchanges with Scarecrow, Carr delves into the raw emotions of a life nearing its end. The play’s structure, confined to a single room yet expansive in its emotional and temporal scope, creates a dreamlike atmosphere where past and present blur. Carr’s lyrical language and dark humor illuminate themes of unfulfilled desires, maternal sacrifice, and the search for meaning in the face of death. The play grapples with questions of identity, passion, and the nature of existence itself, all while maintaining a distinctly Irish sensibility.
