Synopsis

A dark room, illuminated only by candlelight, sets the stage for a young girl’s surreal journey of self-discovery.

Enid, a lonely schoolgirl, begins to believe she’s transforming into a cat in Eva Kerslake-Blue’s whimsical play. As Enid grapples with her changing appearance and behaviour, she navigates the treacherous waters of school social dynamics, particularly her relationships with popular Jessie Lemon-Pink and shy Molly Pear-Brown. Through a series of surreal and comical scenes, Enid’s feline metamorphosis becomes a metaphor for her search for identity and acceptance.

Kerslake-Blue’s imaginative script explores the themes of friendship, bullying, and self-discovery through a childlike lens. As Enid shifts between human and cat-like behaviour, the play delves into the fluid nature of identity and the pressure to conform in school environments. The allegorical nature of Enid’s transformation raises poignant questions about the masks we wear and the lengths we go to fit in. As the characters’ relationships evolve, the audience is left to ponder: In the complex world of adolescent social hierarchies, is it better to be true to oneself or to become what others want us to be?
