Synopsis

A surreal landscape of bureaucratic absurdity in 1970s England

N.F. Simpson’s satirical play Was He Anyone? presents a bewildering world where identity and reality blur into absurdist chaos. The story revolves around a nameless protagonist whose very existence is called into question by an increasingly nonsensical government apparatus. As the central character attempts to prove he is someone, he becomes entangled in a labyrinthine system of forms, interviews, and arbitrary rules that grow more bizarre with each encounter.

Through its fragmented narrative and darkly comedic tone, Was He Anyone? offers a biting critique of bureaucracy and the dehumanising effects of modern society. Simpson’s trademark wit and wordplay are on full display as characters engage in circular logic and nonsensical debates, highlighting the absurdity of rigid systems and the futility of seeking meaning in an irrational world. The play challenges audiences to question the nature of personal identity and the individual’s place within larger societal structures, all while delivering a humorous and thought-provoking theatrical experience.
