Synopsis

A working-class estate in Sittingbourne, Kent, where grief and anger simmer beneath the surface

Charlie and Sammy, two teenagers grappling with the loss of Charlie’s brother in Afghanistan, find solace in each other’s company. As they navigate their burgeoning relationship, Charlie’s older sister Emily and her boyfriend Lee confront their own struggles with identity and purpose. Meanwhile, Danny, the deceased soldier’s best friend, wrestles with guilt and the weight of unspoken truths.

Hayley Squires’ debut play is a raw, unflinching exploration of working-class life and the impact of war on those left behind. Through sharp dialogue the play explores grief, masculinity, and the search for meaning in a world that seems indifferent to personal tragedy. Vera Vera Vera offers a poignant, often darkly humorous look at how young people cope with loss and find connection in the face of adversity.
