Synopsis

South Africa, post-apartheid, where the old meets the new and dreams sprout from the soil

Abraam “Buks” Jonkers, a 76-year-old tenant farmer grapples with the prospect of change as a white man considers buying the land he’s worked all his life. Meanwhile, his granddaughter Veronica dreams of becoming a singer in the city, her ambitions clashing with her grandfather’s desire to maintain their rural way of life.

Fugard’s poignant one-act play explores generational conflict and the hope for a brighter future amidst lingering shadows of apartheid. Using the metaphor of planting and growth, the playwright delves into themes of renewal, tradition, and progress.
