Synopsis

South Africa, post-apartheid, where the old meets the new and dreams sprout from the soil

Abraam “Buks” Jonkers, a 76-year-old tenant farmer grapples with the prospect of change as a white man considers buying the land he’s worked all his life. Meanwhile, his granddaughter Veronica dreams of becoming a singer in the city, her ambitions clashing with her grandfather’s desire to maintain their rural way of life.

Fugard’s poignant one-act play explores generational conflict and the hope for a brighter future amidst lingering shadows of apartheid. Using the metaphor of planting and growth, the playwright delves into themes of renewal, tradition, and progress. The intimate tone captures the nuanced dynamics of familial love and the bittersweet reality of change in a newly democratic South Africa.
