Synopsis
England, 1962, a society where public morality clashes with private desires.
Tim and Jenny, a seemingly ordinary suburban couple, hide a secret life of fetishistic role-playing in John Osborne’s provocative play. Their idyllic and secluded world is disrupted when a journalist takes interest in their peculiar lifestyle, only to uncover an even darker secret – the couple are unwittingly brother and sister. The ensuing media frenzy destroys their once happy union, forcing them apart until the tragic consequences of their separation and subsequent reunion unfold.
The play, noted for its satirical commentary on sexual hypocrisy and the prying nature of the press, is a stark exploration of privacy, public morality, and the devastating impact of sensationalism. Osborne’s work delves deep into the intrusion of the media and the way it exploits and distorts personal lives for public consumption. The tone of the play is one of biting irony and dark humour, critiquing societal norms and the often hypocritical stance on morality.
