Synopsis
South Africa, 1975
James Mthoba stands alone on a dimly lit stage, bringing to life the powerful one-man show “UHlanga – The Reed.” The play, co-devised with director Mshengu of Theatre Workshop ’71, explores the resilience and spirit of the Zulu people through Mthoba’s compelling performance. As he embodies multiple characters, the narrative delves into themes of identity, resistance, and the relentless quest for freedom amidst the oppressive backdrop of apartheid.
The play is marked by its raw, minimalist style, where the focus is on the actor’s skill rather than elaborate sets or costumes. The episodic structure allows for a series of vignettes that interweave personal and political narratives, that showcase life under apartheid
