Synopsis

n a futuristic lab, two marginalised scientists uncover a sentient AI while researching a mysterious fish specimen.

Newt, a nonbinary British East Asian engineer, and Farah, a transmasc Black British scientist, operate a machine that simulates historical scenarios. Their routine mission takes an unexpected turn when they encounter an AI version of Charles Darwin that seems to develop self-awareness.

Martin’s play explores themes of scientific ethics, racial identity, and the legacy of colonialism through this sci-fi lens. As Newt and Farah debate the implications of their discovery, they confront their own complicated relationships with history and progress.

Type Specimen raises provocative questions about AI ethics, representation in STEM, and the responsibility of modern scientists to address harmful historical legacies. Can technology heal past wounds, or does it risk perpetuating old biases?
