Synopsis

Suburban England, 1960s. A conventional family façade hiding layers of dysfunction and silent desperation

Transcending is a satirical one-act play that critiques the middle-class nuclear family, exposing the superficiality and psychological flaws of its members. Her parents, depicted as figures of ridicule with grossly exaggerated psychological deficiencies, are unable to provide the support she needs. The narrative culminates in her escape from this stifling environment, an act of liberation reflecting Carl Jung’s concept of transcending a confining pattern of existence to realise one’s true potential.

Cregan’s sharp dialogue and dark humour offer a critical lens on societal norms, questioning the integrity of conventional family values. The play’s themes include family dysfunction, societal expectations, and the quest for individual freedom.
