Synopsis

London, 1980’s

“Top Girls” is a complex play that revolves around Marlene, a career-driven woman who achieves a significant promotion at a London employment agency. The play opens with a celebratory dinner hosted by Marlene, attended by historical, mythical, and fictional women from various periods, discussing their experiences and challenges.

The subsequent acts delve into Marlene’s personal and professional life, exploring the sacrifices and choices she has made in her pursuit of success. These include strained family relationships and the broader context of women’s roles in society, particularly in the workforce. The play juxtaposes Marlene’s success with the lives of other women in her family and her workplace, highlighting the varied experiences and challenges faced by women in different circumstances.

This play is a non-linear narrative with episodic structure, blending realism with surrealism, especially in the dinner party scene featuring figures from various eras.
