Synopsis

A dilapidated village in an unspecified war-torn region. Time seems to blur between past and present.

In a world teetering on the edge of reality and nightmare, Mariam and her teenage son Jawwad return to their ancestral village, haunted by memories of a long-absent father and husband. As Jawwad grapples with his own emerging identity, he forms a complex relationship with local girl Hiba, who weaves elaborate fictions and harbours dark secrets. Meanwhile, Mariam desperately searches for a lake that may no longer exist, clinging to the hope of reclaiming a lost past.

Taha’s play is a surreal, fragmented exploration of trauma, memory, and identity in the aftermath of conflict. Through a series of non-linear, dreamlike scenes, she blurs the lines between truth and fiction, past and present. The characters’ struggles with displacement and loss are reflected in the distorted landscape itself – a village where reflective casino walls create illusions, frogs appear mysteriously, and a mountain looms as both beacon and barrier. Poetic monologues and haunting imagery create an atmosphere of unease and longing, as the characters search for connection and meaning in a world irrevocably changed by violence.
