Synopsis

A farm labourer’s cottage in Yorkshire. George welcomes John, an assistant director from London, into his home after a rehearsal for the York Mystery Plays.

Set in the 1960s, this tender and poignant play explores the relationship between George, a working-class farm laborer, and John, a middle-class theatre director from London. As they fall in love during the production of the York Mystery Plays, the two men must navigate the cultural and class differences that threaten to keep them apart. Gill delicately examines themes of class, sexuality, and regional identity against the backdrop of a changing Britain.

The play moves between George’s cottage and the rehearsal space, contrasting the warmth of rural Yorkshire life with the possibilities offered by London’s cultural scene. As George struggles with his responsibilities to his aging mother and his place in the local community, John attempts to persuade him to pursue a life in the theater. Their relationship forces both men to confront their own identities and the societal constraints that shape their choices.
