Synopsis
Ancient China’s imperial court collides with a feisty melon vendor in a battle of wills, fists, and societal expectations
Tao Sanchun, a formidable woman with a penchant for melons and martial arts, finds herself betrothed to the cowardly Zheng En through a series of misunderstandings and brotherly meddling. As Zheng En and his imperial brothers scheme to “tame” their new sister-in-law, Tao Sanchun proves she’s more than capable of holding her own against palace intrigues and patriarchal expectations.
Wu Zuguang’s play crackles with wit and subversive energy, using the traditional form of Peking Opera to challenge gender norms and explore themes of power, identity, and social change. Through stylised movement, vibrant costumes, and a blend of comedy and drama, The Three Beatings of Tao Sanchun offers a joyous celebration of female strength while skewering the absurdities of rigid social hierarchies. This centuries-old tale, reimagined for modern audiences, reminds us that true equality often comes with a hefty dose of humour – and perhaps a well-placed whack from an oil mallet.
