Synopsis

An isolated stretch of the Irish coast, where relentless waves crash against unyielding rocks, setting a haunting backdrop for human drama.

Jack, a man haunted by his own inner turmoil, joins a group of friends for what was intended to be a carefree ‘dirty weekend’. However, their lighthearted plans quickly unravel as they anxiously await the arrival of another friend by dinghy, his absence growing more ominous with each passing hour. As the gathering devolves into a tense vigil, the group is forced to confront the chilling possibility that their missing companion may have surrendered to his personal demons and taken his own life.

Whitehead crafts a stark, contemplative piece that delves deep into the themes of despair, friendship, and the unrelenting grip of mental anguish. Through sharp, evocative dialogue, the play lays bare the characters’ inner struggles, their interactions fraught with tension and unspoken fears. As Jack navigates the group’s spiralling anxiety and his own internal battles, the play poses a haunting question: In a world where even the simplest human connections can become frayed, how do we anchor ourselves against the tide of despair?
