Synopsis

A remote cabin by a river, where a man brings different women to fish for sea trout on a moonless night.

The Man brings a succession of women to his isolated cabin for a night of sea trout fishing. As the play progresses, it becomes clear that this is a repeating pattern, with each woman believing she is special and unique. The dialogue shifts between three iterations of this scenario, featuring The Woman, The Other Woman, and Another Woman, all of whom are seemingly interchangeable in The Man’s eyes.

Butterworth’s play is a mesmerising exploration of truth, memory, and the nature of love. Through its cyclical structure and ambiguous timeline, the play delves into themes of deception and the power of storytelling. As each woman discovers she is not as unique as she believed, the play raises questions about the possibility of genuine connection in a world of repeated patterns and ritualised behaviour.
