Synopsis

The warm glow of academic privilege permeates a cozy Oxford study, where books line the walls and the distant chime of college bells floats through an open window.

Philip, a mild-mannered philology professor, finds his carefully ordered world upended when his fiancée Celia abruptly ends their engagement. Struggling with his innate desire to please everyone, Philip navigates a series of awkward encounters with friends and colleagues, including the acerbic writer Braham and the seductive Araminta. As Philip grapples with his newfound loneliness, he confronts uncomfortable truths about his passivity and the emptiness lurking beneath his comfortable academic life.

Hampton’s wit slices through the veneer of intellectual pretension, exposing the insecurities and desperate need for connection that lie beneath. The play’s dialogue crackles with wordplay and literary allusions, while its structure – borrowing from Molière’s “The Misanthrope” – provides a satirical framework for exploring themes of authenticity, social conformity, and the limits of kindness. Dark humour punctuates moments of raw emotional vulnerability, as characters wrestle with their desires and the consequences of their actions in a world where words often fail to bridge the gap between intention and impact.
