Synopsis

A low-slung 1960s house in West California becomes the stage for a decades-long exploration of gender, power, and intimacy.

She and He, former lovers reunited after 20 years, embark on an unconventional arrangement. She proposes a contract: in exchange for financial support, she will provide “mistress services”. Their conversations, recorded on tape, form the basis of their story spanning from 1981 to 2010.

As they navigate their unique relationship, Abi Morgan delves into themes of feminism, ageing, sexuality, and the complexities of male-female dynamics. The play oscillates between intimate moments and broader philosophical discussions, revealing the characters’ vulnerabilities and evolving perspectives over time.
