Synopsis

A snowy Christmas Eve in London. Two nervous police constables stand outside a house, dreading the task that awaits them.

The Lying Kind follows hapless police officers Blunt and Gobbel as they arrive at the home of elderly couple Balthasar and Garson to deliver tragic news about their daughter. What should be a straightforward, if grim, task spirals into chaos as the officers’ attempts to soften the blow lead to an increasingly absurd web of lies and misunderstandings.

Neilson’s pitch-black comedy gleefully pushes the boundaries of taste and propriety, using the officers’ well-meaning deceptions as a springboard for outrageous situational humour. Beneath the riotous comedy, The Lying Kind grapples with deeper questions about the nature of truth and kindness, asking whether a comforting lie might sometimes be preferable to a devastating truth.
