Synopsis

A dilapidated sun deck in the Californian hills, where the untamed wilderness meets the fringes of civilisation

Dennis, an English expatriate and former academic, finds himself embroiled in a darkly comic tale of drugs, deception, and desire. When Lorraine, the estranged wife of his recently deceased friend Morty, returns to claim her late husband’s marijuana crop, she unwittingly steps into a world teetering on the edge of absurdity. Their uneasy alliance is further complicated by the arrival of Andre, a volatile drug dealer with delusions of grandeur, and his manipulative girlfriend Carmen.

The Grass Widow weaves a tapestry of increasingly outlandish situations, blending elements of farce with biting social commentary. Wilson’s script crackles with wit and tension as the characters navigate their own moral ambiguities and conflicting desires. The play explores themes of identity, belonging, and the American Dream gone awry, all set against the backdrop of California’s counter-culture and burgeoning drug trade. Through a series of bizarre encounters and revelations, including a faked séance and a perilous night-time raid, the characters hurtle towards an uncertain future, each grasping for their own piece of an elusive paradise.
