Synopsis

A university campus in the English Midlands, where the pursuit of knowledge clashes with the shadow of Cold War politics

Leo Lehrer, a brilliant but troubled American mathematician, arrives at a British university as a prized recruit. His groundbreaking work on Unified Field Theory attracts not only academic interest but the attention of government agencies on both sides of the Iron Curtain. As Leo grapples with the ethical implications of his research, he forms a complex relationship with Gilly Brown, a gifted young student who shares his passion for mathematics.

Brenton’s intellectual thriller explores the moral responsibilities of scientific discovery in a world shaped by nuclear threat and political espionage. Through a series of tense encounters and ethical dilemmas, the play examines how personal ambitions, institutional pressures, and global politics intersect in the realm of cutting-edge research. As Leo and Gilly’s work threatens to unlock dangerous new possibilities, they must confront the consequences of pure knowledge in an impure world.
