Synopsis

A secluded hollow in the sand dunes near Liverpool, where the line between carefree youth and harsh reality blurs under the glare of a summer sun.

Harry and Tim, two young working-class men, bring Marie and Bella to the beach for a day of supposed romance and fun. What begins as playful flirtation and banter slowly unravels into a tense power struggle fraught with sexual frustration, class resentment, and simmering violence.

Whitehead’s raw, unflinching play peels back the veneer of 1970s British youth culture to expose the ugly undercurrents of misogyny, class conflict, and disillusionment lurking beneath. Through crude jokes, pop culture references, and startlingly brutal exchanges, the foursome dance around their desires and disappointments, unable to truly connect or escape the limitations of their world. As the day wears on and inhibitions lower, the holiday atmosphere gives way to cruelty and desperation, building to a disturbing climax that leaves all four characters stripped bare – literally and figuratively.
