Synopsis

A nation in transition. The old capital fades as a new one rises, built on the backs of reluctant citizens and ambitious opportunists.

In a country undergoing radical change, lives are upended as the government relocates its capital to a remote town. Civil servants, torn from their families, grapple with loneliness and temptation. A cleaner finds unexpected power in her new position, while her neighbour grows suspicious. As the town transforms, a local entrepreneur seizes the chance to open a tea shop, but at what cost to his integrity? Meanwhile, a young girl witnesses a disturbing encounter that shatters her innocence, and a wife flees the new capital, leaving her husband behind.

Wood’s play is a kaleidoscopic view of a society in flux, exploring the ripple effects of authoritarian change on both the powerful and powerless. Through a series of tightly woven vignettes, she examines how corruption, ambition, and fear can corrode personal relationships and moral standards. As characters navigate this brave new world, The Eleventh Capital asks: In a time of upheaval, what price are we willing to pay for progress, and what essential parts of ourselves do we lose along the way?
