Synopsis

A medieval town, trapped in time and terror. Cobblestone streets echo with whispered fears, while the shadow of leathery wings darkens every doorway.

For four centuries, the people of this nameless town have lived under the iron claw of the Dragon, a monstrous tyrant who demands an annual sacrifice of a young maiden. Lancelot, a wandering knight with a heart of gold and a sword of justice, arrives to challenge this age-old oppression. But in a world where fear has become comfort and tyranny a twisted form of protection, his heroism is met with suspicion and resistance.

Schwartz’s biting satire peels back the scales of totalitarianism to reveal the insidious ways power corrupts both the oppressor and the oppressed. Through a cast of colorful characters—from the sycophantic Mayor to the cynical Cat—the play explores how societies can become complicit in their own subjugation. As Lancelot battles not just the Dragon but the townspeople’s complacency, The Dragon asks: is it easier to slay a monster or the mindset that allows it to rule?
