Synopsis

In a seemingly idyllic country house, a doctor and his wife grapple with deception, desire, and the unraveling of their carefully constructed life.

Richard, a doctor, brings home an unconscious young woman named Rebecca, upending the quiet life he shares with his wife Corinne and their children. As the night unfolds, it becomes clear that Richard and Rebecca share a complex history rooted in the city they both left behind. Corinne, initially suspicious and hostile, finds herself drawn into a web of half-truths and shifting loyalties.

Crimp’s play is a taut psychological drama that peels back layers of domestic tranquility to reveal the tensions lurking beneath. Through sharp, elliptical dialogue and moments of surreal storytelling, he explores themes of infidelity, addiction, and the allure of escape. The country setting becomes both refuge and prison, with the characters’ pasts continually threatening to intrude on their present. As the boundaries between truth and fiction, loyalty and betrayal blur, the play asks unsettling questions about the nature of love, trust, and the possibility of truly leaving one’s past behind.
