Synopsis

A claustrophobic office in a government censorship department, where morality and desire collide in a battle of wills.

Frank, a repressed and meticulous film censor, finds his carefully constructed world unraveling when he encounters the enigmatic Miss Fontaine. As they spar over her controversial film, a dangerous game of seduction and manipulation unfolds. Frank’s rigid morality clashes with Fontaine’s provocative theories about sex and censorship, forcing him to confront his own hidden desires and shame.

Neilson’s darkly comedic and intensely psychological drama delves into themes of power, sexuality, and repression. Through sharp dialogue and increasingly surreal encounters, the play blurs the lines between reality and fantasy. As Frank’s professional and personal lives collide, The Censor challenges audiences to examine their own relationship with desire, shame, and societal taboos. The claustrophobic setting and taut two-hander structure create a pressure cooker atmosphere, building to a shocking climax that leaves both characters forever changed.
