Synopsis

A small fishing village in Cornwall, besieged by economic challenges and changing tides.

Swiddles and Leadwell, two seasoned Cornish fishermen, find themselves grappling with the decline of their industry due to stringent EU fishing quotas and dwindling fish stocks. In an attempt to secure their livelihood, they resort to a desperate and dangerous plan: using their lobster pots to smuggle cocaine. Thelma, Swiddles’ pregnant daughter, further complicates the situation with her own set of secrets and challenges. As the fishermen navigate their moral dilemmas and the treacherous waters of their new venture, they are constantly haunted by the consequences of their choices and the looming presence of an unseen, shady figure orchestrating their illicit operations.

The Catch, is a darkly comic yet poignant exploration of survival, morality, and community. The play skillfully balances humor and serious social commentary, capturing the essence of life in a Cornish fishing village facing economic and environmental pressures. Darke’s characters are richly drawn, their dialogues imbued with local dialect and a deep sense of place, making the play both immersive and relatable. The narrative’s tension and absurdity reflect the desperation and resilience of those fighting to preserve their way of life against overwhelming odds.
