Synopsis

The Royal Court Theatre, London, amidst the quiet hum of anticipation.

Nick Payne stands alone on stage, delivering a deeply personal and introspective monologue in The Art of Dying. The narrative weaves together three interconnected stories: Payne’s reflections on the recent loss of his father, the poignant tale of a woman in Milton Keynes grappling with a terminal illness, and the profound relationship between American physicist Richard Feynman and his wife, Arline, who is battling Hodgkin’s disease. Through these narratives, Payne explores the themes of bereavement, mortality, and the delicate ways in which we handle grief and loss.

The Art of Dying is a mix of fact and fiction, with Payne’s tender humour and candid observations offering a sincere and heartfelt examination of life and death. The monologue’s style is understated and poignant, punctuated by moments of lightness that highlight the absurdity and beauty of human connections
