Synopsis

A frenetic journey through the early days of hacktivist group Anonymous, spanning bedrooms, chatrooms, and the global Internet.

In 2009, a group of bored teenagers and young adults stumble into online activism after trolling the Church of Scientology. Led by figures like Jake (aka Topiary) and Mustafa (aka Tflow), they form the hacktivist collective Anonymous and later splinter group LulzSec. As their exploits escalate from pranks to high-profile cyber attacks on major corporations and governments, the group grapples with power, identity, and the consequences of their actions in both the virtual and real worlds.

Price’s play is a chaotic, fragmented exploration of online culture, hacktivism, and the blurred lines between the digital and physical realms. Through a dizzying array of chat logs, news reports, and surreal interludes featuring Internet memes come to life, the play captures the frenetic energy and anarchic spirit of early Anonymous. As the stakes rise and law enforcement closes in, Teh Internet is Serious Business interrogates the price of anonymity, the allure of power, and the unexpected real-world impact of online actions.
