Synopsis

A dingy Dublin tenement room, early 20th century. The air thick with incense and the weight of poverty.

Matt Talbot, a gaunt figure bound by chains and religious fervor, staggers through the streets of Dublin in a feverish quest for redemption. Once an alcoholic, now a self-proclaimed mystic, Matt’s journey from the bottle to the chapel unfolds in a series of vivid, hallucinatory vignettes. As he grapples with his past and an uncertain future, Matt’s life becomes a battleground between earthly temptation and spiritual devotion.

McGuinness weaves a haunting tapestry of guilt, faith, and working-class struggle in this surreal exploration of one man’s quest for sainthood. The play’s non-linear structure mirrors Matt’s fractured psyche, blending gritty realism with moments of transcendent poetry. Dark humor punctuates scenes of intense religious fervor, creating a tonal dissonance that echoes the protagonist’s internal conflict. Through Matt’s interactions with family members, fellow workers, and religious figures – both real and imagined – the play probes the fine line between devotion and madness, questioning the nature of faith in a world rife with suffering and injustice.
