Synopsis

London, 1985, in a bustling theatre surrounded by controversy.

Susan, an aspiring actress facing a life-changing decision, stands at the center of Jonathan Gems’ provocative play. She finds herself entangled with Lemon, a mysterious young man who disrupts her plans with an unexpected pregnancy. Struggling between her burgeoning career and the personal ramifications of motherhood, Susan contemplates an abortion to secure a pivotal movie role. The play unflinchingly examines her journey through a landscape of love, ambition, and societal expectations.

Susan’s Breasts boldly addresses themes of love, reproductive rights, and feminist critiques. Its narrative is steeped in high comic spirits while maintaining a strongly moral core, challenging audiences with its controversial subject matter. The play’s raw, evocative tone and character-driven storyline were so impactful that it incited feminist protests during its original run, highlighting the intense emotional and societal debates it sparked.
