Synopsis

A shabby London flat, present day. Two women, one wheelchair, and a world of misunderstanding.

Lisa and Rachael, lifelong friends and struggling actresses, set out to create a show together but find themselves bereft of ideas. Desperate for inspiration, they turn to the public, asking strangers to imagine what kind of play they’d be in. What follows is a darkly comic journey through societal perceptions, personal frustrations, and the harsh realities of being disabled in an entertainment industry that claims to embrace diversity but falls woefully short.

Through a series of vignettes, songs, and meta-theatrical moments, Still No Idea lays bare the systemic barriers faced by disabled performers. The play’s structure mirrors its content, repeatedly building up hope only to dash it against the rocks of reality. Disability, representation, and the gap between performative inclusivity and genuine equality take center stage. Hammond and Spence blend acerbic wit with moments of raw vulnerability, creating a piece that is simultaneously hilarious and heartbreaking. As Lisa and Rachael struggle to find their place in stories that weren’t written for them, the audience is forced to confront their own preconceptions and the insidious nature of ableism in the arts and beyond.
