Synopsis

A stark, dimly lit room in apartheid-era South Africa, where forbidden love defies the crushing weight of an unjust system.

Frieda Joubert, a white librarian, and Errol Philander, a “coloured” school principal, are caught in a moment of intimacy by the police. As they face interrogation, their personal histories and the harsh realities of their society are laid bare through a series of fragmented statements and recollections.

Athol Fugard’s Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act is a searing indictment of apartheid’s dehumanizing laws and their impact on individual lives. Through poetic, often dreamlike dialogue, Fugard exposes the absurdity and cruelty of a system that criminalizes love based on skin color. The play’s minimalist staging and use of nudity underscore the vulnerability of the characters, stripped not only of their clothes but of their dignity by an oppressive regime. As Frieda and Errol grapple with their feelings for each other and the consequences of their actions, Statements offers a powerful meditation on the intersection of the personal and political, and the human cost of institutionalised racism.
