Synopsis

A stark, dimly lit room in apartheid-era South Africa, where forbidden love defies the crushing weight of an unjust system.

Frieda Joubert, a white librarian, and Errol Philander, a “coloured” school principal, are caught in a moment of intimacy by the police. As they face interrogation, their personal histories and the harsh realities of their society are laid bare through a series of fragmented statements and recollections.

Athol Fugard’s Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act is a searing indictment of apartheid’s dehumanizing laws and their impact on individual lives.
