Synopsis

A working-class neighborhood in Cardiff, Wales, 1950s-1960s.

Gerard and Vincent, childhood friends from the same street, navigate the complexities of their relationship as they grow from boys to young men. Their intertwined lives unfold against the backdrop of their mothers’ struggles – Mrs. Harte and Mrs. Driscoll – two women bound by proximity and shared hardships in a changing post-war world.

Peter Gill’s Small Change is a poetic, non-linear exploration of memory, class, and the bonds of family and friendship. The play’s fragmented structure mirrors the characters’ fractured recollections, blending past and present as Gerard grapples with his childhood experiences and their lasting impact. Through vivid, lyrical language and raw emotional exchanges, Gill delves into themes of working-class identity, masculinity, and the unspoken desires that shape lives.
