Synopsis

A dimly lit California motel room becomes the arena for a high-stakes confrontation between past and present.

Carter, a successful Kentucky racehorse breeder, finds his carefully constructed life teetering on the brink of collapse when his former partner-in-crime, Vinnie, resurfaces demanding help. Their shared history of fraud and blackmail in the racing world threatens to unravel Carter’s newfound respectability, forcing him to confront the moral compromises that have defined his existence. As Carter navigates this treacherous terrain, he must grapple with questions of loyalty, identity, and the true cost of redemption.

In this gripping work, Sam Shepard delves into the dark underbelly of American ambition, exploring themes of deception, corruption, and the inescapable nature of one’s past. Shepard’s razor-sharp dialogue crackles with tension as the characters circle each other in a dangerous dance of revelation and concealment.

Through a series of taut, emotionally charged scenes, Shepard examines the fragility of success and the ways in which our past actions continue to shape our present. The playwright’s trademark exploration of masculine relationships takes center stage, revealing the complex bonds that tie these men together even as they threaten to tear each other apart.
