Synopsis
A cramped London flat, where the worlds of tradition and modernity collide.
Sabrina, a young British Muslim woman, finds herself caught between two worlds as she navigates her burgeoning feelings for Reza, a devout Muslim man she meets while organising a charity fashion show. Their tentative romance is complicated by Zain, Sabrina’s gay flatmate and best friend, whose lifestyle challenges traditional Islamic values. As Sabrina grapples with her identity and desires, she must confront the expectations of her community, represented by Reza’s sister Nazia, and the prejudices that threaten to tear her world apart.
Bano’s play is a nuanced exploration of cultural identity, faith, and love in contemporary Britain. Through sharp dialogue and moments of biting humor, she examines the complexities of being a modern Muslim woman and the tensions between tradition and personal freedom. The play’s structure, moving between the fashion show preparations and more intimate scenes, allows for a layered examination of prejudice, acceptance, and the struggle to find one’s place in a rapidly changing world.
