Synopsis

A shabby seaside hotel room in Scarborough, where two illicit relationships unfold in parallel, exposing the complex dynamics of power, desire, and exploitation.

Scarborough follows two pairs of lovers: Lauren and Daz, and Aiden and Beth. In each couple, an adult teacher is involved with their sixteen-year-old student. The play alternates between these relationships, mirroring their interactions and revealing the uncomfortable similarities in their situations.

Fiona Evans’ provocative drama uses its four-person cast to explore the cyclical nature of abuse and the blurred lines of consent in relationships with significant age and power imbalances. By presenting both male and female teachers in these roles, the play challenges audience perceptions about gender and victimhood. The claustrophobic seaside setting serves as a pressure cooker for these intense, doomed affairs, forcing characters and viewers alike to confront uncomfortable truths about desire, exploitation, and the lasting impact of trauma.
