Synopsis

A kitchen bathed in soft evening light, where a wooden table laden with wine, cheese, and sun-ripened plums becomes a battlefield of unspoken tensions.

Daniel returns from the conflict-torn streets of Ramallah, his clothes still carrying the scent of borrowed cigarettes and distant gunfire. He unpacks exotic cheeses and stories of vibrant markets, desperately trying to bridge the gulf between his harrowing experiences and the quiet domesticity of home. Across the table, Helen sips wine and listens, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass as she wrestles with a cocktail of relief, resentment, and fear for their family’s uncertain future.

Stephens’ play is a masterful exploration of the invisible walls that spring up between couples, even as they yearn to reconnect. Through Daniel’s lyrical descriptions of Ramallah’s war-torn beauty and Helen’s terse comments about overdrawn bank accounts and bedwetting children, we see two people struggling to inhabit the same emotional space. The kitchen becomes a microcosm of larger global conflicts, where the personal and political collide over a simple meal. With each sip of monk-made wine and bite of feta cheese, the playwright peels back layers of privilege, guilt, and the complex dynamics of a marriage strained by distance and diverging experiences.
