Synopsis

In a dimly lit high-rise flat in Aberdeen, the bleakness of everyday existence clashes with the desperate need for connection, leading to an explosive and tragic encounter

Keith, a young man living in a run-down apartment, navigates his lonely and monotonous life with a sense of desperation. One night, he meets Shazza at a club and brings her back to his flat, hoping for a spark of intimacy to break the monotony. The evening begins with awkward attempts at tenderness but quickly unravels into a disturbing and violent confrontation. Murdo, an older, disillusioned man burdened by his own failures, enters the scene, intensifying the already charged atmosphere. As secrets are revealed and tensions escalate, the characters’ vulnerabilities come to the forefront, painting a harrowing picture of urban decay and human despair.

Rainbow Kiss is a visceral exploration of loneliness, desperation, and violence. The play’s tone is dark and unrelenting, capturing the raw emotions and bleak realities of its characters through vivid and intense dialogue. Farquhar’s writing masterfully conveys the suffocating atmosphere of the setting, bringing the characters’ inner turmoil to life in a way that is both compelling and unsettling. The narrative drives home the impact of unmet desires and societal pressures, highlighting the fragility of human connections in a fractured world.
