Synopsis

A grimy bathroom in a Liverpool council estate, 1965

Bobby, a young working-class lad, dreams of escaping the confines of his northern roots. When he returns from London with tales of a brighter future, he finds himself caught between two worlds: the familiar comfort of home and the alluring promise of a new life in the capital. As he grapples with his identity and ambitions, Bobby’s relationships with family and friends become increasingly strained, forcing him to confront the harsh realities of class division and social mobility.

Progress to the Park is an exploration of class, identity, and the struggle for self-improvement. Through sharp dialogue and richly drawn characters, Owen captures the tensions between tradition and progress, loyalty and ambition. The play’s kitchen-sink realism is punctuated by moments of lyrical beauty, as Bobby’s dreams of a better life clash with the gritty reality of his surroundings.
