Synopsis

In the seedy, vibrant clubs of Hamburg, where youthful ambition meets gritty reality, a legendary band is on the cusp of fame.

Presence by David Harrower takes us back to 1960, capturing a fictionalised account of The Beatles’ early days during their first residency in Hamburg. The play revolves around George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Pete Best as they share a cramped room and navigate the rough-and-tumble nightlife of the Indra Club. John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe are referenced off-stage, contributing to the tension and camaraderie among the group. As they grapple with their dreams, the young band members encounter Marian, an older German woman who brings a poignant counterpoint to their youthful ignorance of history, and Elke, whose interactions add to the chaotic atmosphere of their stay.

The play explores themes of youthful ambition, the harshness of reality, and the formation of identity. Harrower’s writing brings a raw, energetic portrayal of the band’s formative period, mixing humour with moments of deep introspection. The play highlights the contrast between the band’s carefree antics and the darker historical shadows cast by post-war Germany.
