Synopsis
Set in the vibrant streets of 1950s Port of Spain, Trinidad, where the anticipation of carnival pulses through the air.
Samuel, a young tailor’s assistant, dreams of Trinidad’s independence from British colonial rule. As the island prepares for its annual carnival, known as “mas,” the streets come alive with color and festivity. However, this celebration takes a dark turn, setting off a chain of events that will propel Samuel into a pivotal role in shaping his nation’s future. Through a blend of wicked humor and poignant drama, Play Mas by Mustapha Matura captures the spirit and struggles of a community on the brink of political transformation.
The play deftly balances exuberance and tragedy, reflecting the complexities of post-colonial identity and the masquerade of power and politics. As the characters navigate the shifting social landscape, Matura’s sharp satire and keen insight into Trinidadian culture shine through, making Play Mas a compelling exploration of hope, ambition, and the cost of freedom.
